2017 University of Tennessee Knoxville Chemistry Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) funded by NSF

Program: The UTK Chemistry Department seeks applicants for an NSF-funded summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program in 2018. Participants will work on a research project under the direction of a faculty mentor. The program will also offer multiple seminars, workshops, site visits, and social events. Student participants will receive a $5,000 stipend, free housing and parking on campus for ten weeks. Travel will be reimbursed up to $500.

Eligibility:
 Undergraduate student participants must have completed their freshmen year of college but not yet graduated, and must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its possessions. Underrepresented groups in science are strongly encouraged to apply, including minorities, women, and first-generation college students.

International Research Experience in Japan

Rice University and the Nakatani Foundation are pleased to announce the opening of the application cycle for the 2018 Nakatani RIES: Research & International Experience Program for U.S. Students in Japan! This is a 13-week, summer research internship in science & engineering that is open to freshman and sophomore students nationwide.   The program seeks to cultivate an interest in science & engineering research and future graduate study among young undergraduate students. Nakatani RIES is geared towards the needs of young undergraduates who are new to scientific research and study of Japanese language and culture; no prior research or language experience is required.

National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration Hollings Scholarship

The Hollings Scholarship Program provides successful undergraduate applicants with awards that include academic assistance (up to $9,500 per year) for two years of full-time study and a 10-week, full-time paid ($700/week) internship at a NOAA facility during the summer.

The internship between the first and second years of the award provides the scholars with hands-on, practical experience in NOAA-related science, research, technology, policy, management, and education activities. Awards also include travel funds to attend a mandatory NOAA Scholarship Program orientation and the annual Science & Education Symposium, scientific conferences where students present their research, and a housing subsidy for scholars who do not reside at home during the summer internship.

Summer Internship Programs: USARL & USAISR

Two programs are currently accepting applicants for the 2018 summer period.  The U.S. Army Research Lab Summer Journeyman Fellowship Program and the U.S. Army Institute for Surgical Research Summer Internship Program. These are amazing opportunities for your students to expand their research experience within their area of study!

In addition to these summer opportunities, we have an extensive amount of available research opportunities with over 70 Department of Defense programs in all areas of STEM.  We encourage students to check out the available opportunities administered by the ORAU Maryland Office.  The ORAU Maryland Office administers the Army Research Lab Research Associateship Program (formerly the ARL Postdoctoral Program) and all ORISE Department of Defense opportunities.  Aside from the "summer" opportunities, most post-graduate research appointments are scheduled to be a twelve month appointments; the renewal or continuation of the research appointment is contingent upon facility approval and upon the continued availability of funds.  Renewals are offered up to one year at a time, for a total of up to five years of research participation.
