Oral Presentations

Oral presentations take a lecture-style approach to discussing a research topic or creative scholarship. Presentations are approximately 15 minutes in length and in many cases are accompanied by PowerPoint slides.

There are two divisions of oral presentations. Human Engagement may include any presentations discussing topics within the humanities, arts, social sciences, education, or business. Science and technology typically includes disciplines related to science, technology, engineering or math.

Commenting on Presentations

Our virtual symposium uses the platform VoiceThread to enable virtual engagement between presenters and symposium attendees. We encourage attendees to leave a comment or question after watching the presentations. Student presenters will participate in "synchronous commenting" to answer your questions between the 2-4:30pm on July 23, and they will continue to monitor their presentations to answer any additional questions until July 30.

To leave a comment, follow the instructions below.

1. Create a free VoiceThread account using a non-WVU email address (i.e. instead use a gmail account, a yahoo account, etc.):  https://voicethread.com/register/

2. Navigate back to our symposium webpage and select the presentation on which you wish to comment.

3. If you are not already logged in, use the "sign in" button at the top right to log into your VoiceThread account.

4. Once logged in and viewing the presentation on which you wish to comment, use the + Comment button in the bottom center of the page to choose from the available methods (typing text, using your phone, recording an audio comment, recording a video comment, or uploading a comment). Drag the scrubber ball to the point in the presentation where you want to insert your comment, then add and save your comment.
