WVU MD/PhD Summer Research Internship

The MD/PhD Summer Research Internship is an 8-week hands-on program designed for students interested in pursuing a career as a physician-scientist.  The internship provides an opportunity to actively engage in biomedical research and gain clinical shadowing experience.  Students can participate in research projects in the following areas:
  • Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
  • Cancer Cell Biology
  • Cellular and Integrative Physiology
  • Exercise Physiology
  • Immunology and Microbial Pathogenesis
  • Neuroscience
  • Pharmaceutical and Pharmacological Sciences 
 The program includes: 
  • Competitive stipend ($4,000) 
  • Travel assistance (up to $500)
  • Housing assistance (up to $1,000)
  • Clinical shadowing in area of interest 
  • Flexible Start Date 
  • Mentoring activities with MD/PhD students
  • Professional development workshops (i.e. MD/PhD Pipeline Program, interviewing skills, writing personal statements, building your CV, STEM career panel, creating elevator pitch)
  • Clinical skills learning sessions - to apply concepts from case-based learning and to practice skills that will be useful in medical school
  • Opportunity to present a poster at the Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium (July 28, 2022)
 Evaluation Criteria:
  • Stated interest to pursue MD/PhD dual degree training
  • Strong academic record, particularly in science courses
  • Current freshman, sophomore, or junior from this academic year
  • Recommendation letters from 2 faculty members 

Preference will be given to those who identify as an underrepresented minority in medicine. Underrepresented in medicine (UiM) for the purpose of this program are those individuals belonging to a particular ethnic or racial group which has been considered by the National Institute of Health (NIH) and the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) to be underrepresented in biomedical research (relative to their numbers in the general population).
