The Franciscan Institute for World Health (FIWH) in partnership with AbbVie is co-coordinating this unique, not-for-profit, learning opportunity for undergraduates exclusively for educational, humanitarian, and career learning purposes. In 2021, the program is inviting undergraduates from Augustana College, Ave Maria University, Bluffton University, Calvin College, Carleton College, Cornell College, Duquesne University, Franciscan University of Steubenville, Goshen College, Grinnell College, Illinois Wesleyan University, Louisiana State University, Saint Francis University, University of Dallas, and West Virginia University
The internship, now in its eleventh year, is a 10 week, 30 hour/week, virtual internship experience of collaborative research on Neglected Tropical Disease targets side-by-side with AbbVie Medicinal Chemists and Dr. Jeffrey Rohde. Interns will participate in a critical step in this global effort: helping to design new small molecules as potential novel drug therapies. With access to state-of-the art scientific modeling tools, students will learn to conduct medicinal chemistry research and regularly give updates on their efforts in team meetings. The summer will conclude for each intern with a poster and/or PowerPoint presentation to the full project team and a performance evaluation of their summer work by their project supervisor.
