Smithsonian's NSF REU Site: Natural History Research Experiences

Natural History Research Experiences (NHRE) is a paid 10-week summer internship program hosted at the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C. In 2022 it will run May 31 through August 5. NHRE interns work closely with scientific mentors to complete independent research projects in Earth science, biology, and anthropology.

Applications are due February 2.

Applications Open for 2022 SURE Program

Undergraduates are encouraged to apply to engage in scholarly activity (research/creative work) via the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) program. 

The deadline to submit an application is March 2, 2022.  Faculty are encouraged to apply to mentor undergraduates in scholarly activity via the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience program and to inform their undergraduates that SURE applications are open.

2022 Applications Open for NIST SURF

The U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is seeking enthusiastic undergraduate students to apply to the agency’s premier Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Program. The SURF Program will be administered virtually with program dates of May 23, 2022 to August 5, 2022. Note: Participants will not travel to the NIST laboratories to conduct research in the 2022 SURF Program. Therefore, the fellowship does not include support for travel or lodging.

Since 1993, SURF students from across the country have had the opportunity to gain valuable, hands-on experience, working with cutting edge technology in one of the world's leading research organizations and home to three Nobel Prize winners. The mission of the SURF Program is to inspire undergraduate students to pursue careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) through a unique research experience that supports the NIST mission.

2022 Awards for Distinction in Mentoring Undergraduates in Research

Are you aware of a WVU faculty member or a graduate student who demonstrates excellence in mentoring undergraduates in research and creative endeavors? 

Nominations for the 2022 Awards for Distinction in Mentoring Undergraduates in Research are now open and will be accepted through Feb. 13, 2022. For 2022, we have introduced a new award for Graduate Student Mentors.

Office of Undergraduate Research Student Workers Wanted

The Office of Undergraduate Research is seeking to fill  two communications student worker positions for Spring 2022: the Office of Undergraduate Research Website, and Undergrad Research Newsletters. These students will work with office administrators to tell the stories of students conducting research.

The positions will be up to approximately 10 hours a week during the academic year and are paid positions at a rate of $10.00 per hour. These are ideal positions for students majoring in journalism, communications, strategic communications or English who desire to build a professional portfolio of work, however students of all majors will be considered.
