The Portz Fellowship program was launched in 2010 and is supported by the John and
Edythe Portz Interdisciplinary Research Fellowship. It is intended to support creative
and innovative endeavors that cross boundaries, inviting application from individuals
who wish to undertake cross disciplinary research or from a team of two students
from different disciplines who propose a single collaborative project. The project
will be funded for a period of up to 18 months.
Honors students in good standing from 2-year colleges or 4-year colleges and universities
with current Institutional membership in NCHC may apply at any point in their undergraduate
studies. In addition to two letters of recommendation from faculty members, an
endorsement from the institutional representative named in the NCHC membership
is required. Only
ONE PROPOSAL per year from each member institution is permitted.
ORNL participates in the Department of Energy Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI). The program is sponsored and managed by the DOE Office of Science’s Office of Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists (WDTS) in collaboration with the DOE national laboratories. The program encourages undergraduates and recent associate and bachelor’s graduates to pursue STEM careers by providing research experiences at a DOE laboratory.
Natural History Research Experiences (NHRE) is a paid 10-week summer internship program hosted at the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C. In 2022 it will run May 31 through August 5. NHRE interns work closely with scientific mentors to complete independent research projects in Earth science, biology, and anthropology.
Undergraduates are encouraged to apply to engage in scholarly activity (research/creative
work) via the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) program.
The deadline to submit an application is March 2, 2022.
Faculty are encouraged to apply to mentor undergraduates in scholarly activity
via the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience program and to inform their
undergraduates that SURE applications are open.
The U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is seeking enthusiastic undergraduate students to apply to the agency’s premier Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Program. The SURF Program will be administered virtually with program dates of May 23, 2022 to August 5, 2022. Note: Participants will not travel to the NIST laboratories to conduct research in the 2022 SURF Program. Therefore, the fellowship does not include support for travel or lodging.
Since 1993, SURF students from across the country have had the opportunity to gain valuable, hands-on experience, working with cutting edge technology in one of the world's leading research organizations and home to three Nobel Prize winners. The mission of the SURF Program is to inspire undergraduate students to pursue careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) through a unique research experience that supports the NIST mission.
Are you aware of a WVU faculty member or a graduate student who demonstrates excellence in mentoring undergraduates in research and creative endeavors?
