REAC/TS is an Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education
facility with the mission to strengthen the medical response to radiological
and nuclear incidents. REAC/TS has recently partnered with NASA to provide
specialized knowledge for the medical community and emergency planners in the
area around the upcoming Mars Rover Launch. ORISE is hosting a research-based
challenge for undergraduate students to research a partner supporting NASA’s
upcoming Mars 2020 Launch, learn about the partner’s capabilities, and discuss
why that partner is necessary for the mission. Your research could win you
a $5,000 scholarship!
The deadline for this competition is March 31st,
2020, and winners will be announced in early May.
Are you doing research in a chemistry-related field?
The deadline to submit applications is March
15, 2020 at 11:59 pm Pacific Time. The grants are
made possible by designated funds from the National Academy of Sciences and
from donations. Students may apply for funding from the program twice each
year.
Three
to five student-worker positions are needed in the Bioinformatics Core under
Dr. Michael Hu at the Department of Microbiology,
Immunology and Cell Biology. The positions are expected to work
15 to 20 hours a week while classes are in session and paid at $10 an hour
through the end of June 2020 with a possibility of extensions based on
performance. Junior and senior undergraduate students in biology, computer
science, engineering, mathematics or physics with programming experience are
encouraged to apply. Students in the biology background but a strong motivation
to learn programing will also be considered. Review of applications will start on Feb. 28
This is an opportunity for your undergraduate students to learn more
about PhD education and how to best prepare to apply for PhD programs. The Penn
Honors Diversity (PHD) Symposium will be held from October 8-10, 2020 at the
University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA. The Symposium aims to
particularly attract underrepresented students, especially sophomores and
juniors, at colleges and universities in the Mid-Atlantic states who are
interested in learning more about graduate school. Students will have the opportunity
to (a) network with faculty and current graduate students, (b) learn about
cutting-edge research and PhD training opportunities at Penn, (c) present their
work to faculty and students in a poster session, and (d) attend workshops and
seminars about the admissions process, funding opportunities, life as a
graduate student, etc.
MORGANTOWN, W. Va.— Over the next three years, six WVU undergraduate student researchers will have the opportunity to conduct funded research thanks to the Beckman Scholars Program, which will provide up to $156,000 in funding and leadership development. Students should apply by March 2 at 11:59 p.m. and can learn more about the program and how to apply on the WVU Beckman Scholars Program website.
West Virginia University is among 12 top research universities across the United States selected for the 2020 Beckman Scholars Program by the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation.
Applications are now being accepted for summer interns at NASA! This year the NASA Headquarters Science Mission Directorate (SMD) plans bring aboard up to 15 students for paid internship opportunities. Students will have the chance to work on exciting new projects and gain meaningful work experience within SMD. There are also opportunities at NASA Centers around the country. The deadline for applications for the summer internships is March 8.
With funding from the National Science Foundation’s LSAMP Program, OTS offers a research experience for students from NSF LSAMP Alliance member institutions. Students selected for the program will live at La Selva Research Station or Las Cruces Research Station for their eight-week program.
La Selva Research Station and Las Cruces Research Station provide undergraduate students with unparalleled access to tropical forest ecosystems, mentoring by experienced tropical ecology researchers, and training in field research methodology. Each student will work with an on-station (field) mentor as well as an on-campus (home) mentor from his/her home institution to ensure the integration of the summer research experience into students’ academic careers.
2020 WVU STEM Ambassador
Program - Accepting applications!
WVU STEM Ambassadors act as
science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) instructors and camp/cabin
counselors during 4-H summer camps and events across the state of West
Virginia. Given training and materials, ambassadors travel throughout the state
during the summer and deliver pre-arranged STEM curriculum in a variety of
settings. Events include county 4-H day or overnight camps, summer youth
program sites, state 4-H camps located at Jackson’s Mill in Jane Lew, WV, the
West Virginia State Fair located in Lewisburg, WV, and camps on the WVU
campuses in Morgantown and Beckley.
Posted on Jan 30, 2020:Dr. Sunil Sharma is looking for a
motivated student who is interested in learning more about improving care for
West Virginians who have limited access to health care. Sleep disordered
breathing (SDB) is a highly prevalent condition with fatal cardio-pulmonary
implications. Though early recognition and treatment of SDB can avert heart
failure, it is an under-recognized and under-diagnosed condition. Our novel
hospital sleep medicine program provides cost effective early screening,
diagnosis and intervention of SDB in hospitalized patients. The goal of this study
is to evaluate the program’s effectiveness. We are interested in (i) the impact
of early interventions on SDB in patients hospitalized for COPD exacerbation
and (ii) screening of acute stroke patients with high resolution pulse-oximetry
for undetected SDB.
