2022 Fall Undergraduate Research Symposium-Winners and Runners-Up

On Saturday, December 3, the Office of Undergraduate Research hosted our Fifth Annual Fall Undergraduate Research Symposium in the Mountainlair on the WVU Downtown Campus. A huge congratulations to our category winners and runners-up below, and an enormous thanks to all our presenters, mentors, judges, and attendees who made this symposium such a success!

ORAL PRESENTATIONS

Human Engagement 

  • Winner: Julia Lopez presented: The Dark History of Italian - Americanism in West Virginia. Mentor. Nancy Caronia. Julia is a History major at WVU and participates in the Research Apprenticeship Program (RAP).

Science & Technology 

  • Winner: Kennedi Lewellyn presented: Anti-inflammatory and Anti-microbial Activity of Recombinant Alkaline Phosphatase in a Mouse Model of Sepsis. Mentor: Candice Brown. Kennedi is a Biology major at WVU and participated in the Research Apprenticeship Program (RAP).



POSTER PRESENTATIONS

Arts, Humanities, and Design

  • Winner: Isaac McCarthy presented: Survey of Tenor Banjos Created by Andrew Boarman. Mentor: Travis Stimeling. Isaac is a Music major at WVU and participates in the Research Apprenticeship Program (RAP).

Biological & Biochemical Sciences 

  • Winner: Jillian Goodrich presented: Acquisition of N-acetylglucosamine for Peptidoglycan Production in Borrelia burgdorferi. Mentor: Timothy Driscoll. Jillian is a Biology major at WVU and presented their Capstone project.

  • Runner-Up: Kaitlyn Keith presented: Manipulating htt Nucleation and Elongation in a C. elegans Model of Huntington’s Disease. Mentor: Justin Legleiter. Kaitlyn is a Biology and Chemistry major at WVU and participates in the Research Apprenticeship Program (RAP).

Environmental & Agricultural Sciences

  • Winner: Stephen Williams presented: Effects of Selection for Residual Feed Intake on Immune Gene Expression in Beef Steers. Mentor: Ibukun Ogunade. Stephen is a Biochemistry major at WVU and presented their capstone project.

Health Sciences & Community Health 

  • Winner: Joshua Hall presented: Humoral response of mice immunized with Lyme vaccines. Mentor: Maria De La Paz Gutierrez. Joshua is an Immunology and Medical Microbiology  major at WVU and participates in the Research Apprenticeship Program (RAP).
  • Runner-up: Farah Kisto presented: RNA Sequencing of Pre-Clinical Models of Glioblastoma. Mentor: Sonikpreet Aulakh. Farah is an Exercise Physiology major at WVU and participates in the Research Apprenticeship Program (RAP).

Physical Sciences & Engineering 

  • Winner: Alexander Flasch presented: Research and Development of a Robotic Gripper for Picking Spherical Produce. Mentor: Guilherme Pereira. Alexander is a Mechanical Engineering major at WVU and participates in the Research Apprenticeship Program (RAP).
  • Runner-Up:  William Bullock presented: Numerical Analysis of Pressurized Biomass-Coal Oxy-Combustion. Mentor: V'yacheslav Akkerman. William is a Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering major at WVU and participates in the Research Apprenticeship Program (RAP).

Social & Behavioral Sciences 

  • Winner: Aiden Aiello presented: MINDDS: Mental Health in Digestive Disease Study. Mentor: Christina Duncan. Aiden is an Exercise Physiology major and participates in the Research Apprenticeship Program (RAP).
