If you are interested in research or a research career, you are strongly encouraged to apply for summer research opportunities beyond WVU. Many programs encourage applications by January 2024 though each program has its own deadline. To find external opportunities, check the External Opportunities posted on the Office of Undergraduate Research website.
One recommended opportunity is
NIST SURF. This is a paid 11-week research experience at a national lab (National
Institute of Standards and Technology in either Gaithersburg, MD or Boulder, CO).

A second recommended opportunity is NSF-funded
Research Experiences for Undergraduates sites (REU). NSF funds a large number
of research opportunities for undergraduate students through its REU Sites program. Students
are granted stipends and, in many cases, assistance with housing and travel. Applications
are offered at institutions nationwide. Search for an REU Site by discipline
or by region (
REU Search).
